Walter lives at Plover Flats, Calamus Farm, north of Newburgh, where he has followed the seasons since the early '70's. A practicing artist and teacher, Sawron attended the Ontario College of Art, first in advertising and design, and then after an interval at teachers' college, and a stint in elementary school teaching, in drawing and painting. Upon graduating from O.C.A. in 1970, he took a graduate degree (Masters in Art Education, M.Sc.) at the Pratt Institute in New York. He exhibited in Toronto throughout the 1970's and 1980's, and had solo shows at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Kingston in 1972 and 1992. During this time and up to the present, his work has appeared in numerous group shows. Sawron's work, often rooted in his leaning toward the graphic woodcut is dense in formal, colouristic and expressive qualities. Multiple levels of meaning drawn from a rich imaginative life are echoed in Sawron's paintings and boxes: the tangible layering of words, objects, and images, one upon the other.
